Why the Sethusamudram project is a big deal, despite odds

Image
The Sethusamudram Canal Project has been at the center of a contention since the time it was first proposed. Various sections of the population have been wary of the proposed construction of a 83 km long canal on the 50 km limestone trail, popularly called Ram Sethu, citing ecological and religious reasons. The building of this canal will require deep sea excavation by dredging and, or blasting the Ram Sethu, resulting in unprecedented ecological disturbance in the area, it is argued. As is the case with most ancient structures, not much is known about the composition of the trail. Experts suggest that there is inconsistent sedimentation in different parts of the trail and the entire palk bay area, making the ecological repercussions of such large-scale construction on it, impossible to predict. The area is also cyclone prone, with storms in the past having changed sedimentation patterns in the area, further adding to its volatility. There are also fears that such a structure will i

Why Iran should stage a comeback in India’s Foreign Policy calculus

Image
Two recent developments have brought the strategic importance of Iran into India’s foreign policy calculus. As per reports, Iran and India are close to finalizing the long-term arrangements for operating the Chabahar port. Secondly, Iran became a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) whose Summit was held at Samarkand in Uzbekistan last week. The likely conclusion of the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers will only underscore the growing significance of Iran to the geopolitics of Eurasia, Persian Gulf region and of India. Iran’s pivotal geographical location and the probable connectivity links that it can offer is one of the most important assets. Iranian ports like Bandar Abbas and Chabahar are key transit points for the trade corridors connecting India and the Indian Ocean with the Inner Asia. The International North South Transit Corridor (INSTC) which has been in the strategic discourse for almost two decades, without much progress, has suddenly come ali

After nearly three weeks of hate incidents and violence that rocked Leicester, community leaders from the Muslim and Hindu groups issued a joint statement appealing for harmony. From Nigeria to Kenya, Indian Navy fearlessly protects coasts of Africa

Image
Indian Naval Ship (INS) Tarkash’s joint maritime exercise with the patrol ships of the Nigerian Navy in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) earlier this week marked a new level of strategic convergence between both the nations on the crucial west coast of Africa. The first joint operational deployment by India and Nigeria in support of anti-piracy operations in the GoG witnessed INS Tarkash, currently on operational deployment in the region, carry out exercises with Nigerian Navy’s NNS Kano, Osun, Sokoto and Nguru. INS Tarkash’s third visit to Lagos since 2017 not only strengthens bilateral naval ties but also furthers the Indian Navy’s operational philosophy of Mission Based Deployments under which ships are regularly deployed in maritime areas of interest to India to ensure that the national interests are protected. Nigeria remains a country of immense significance for India with both countries having enjoyed robust ties. India is also the largest importer of Nigerian petroleum products. India,

Why restarting Thar Express is essential to stop persecution of Pakistani Hindus

Image
A recent story by The Hindu made a lot of uncomfortable noise as it mentioned 800 Pakistani Hindus leaving India for Pakistan in 2021. It was unsettling to read that Hindus who wanted to stay in India left the country for Pakistan where they are routinely discriminated against. Lack of empathy in India and Covid-19 also played a major role in their return to an unsafe situation. Between 2015-2019, India granted citizenship to 2,668 Pakistani nationals, but these numbers are minuscule compared to the tsunami of people fleeing Pakistan due to religious persecution. Rajasthan houses the maximum number of Pakistani minority migrants—around 25,000, of which 7,500 are in Jodhpur alone. Since the Partition of India, millions of people both Hindus and Muslims migrated but after a few years, the Muslim migration to Pakistan stopped while Hindu migration to India continues till date due to persecution of Hindus at the individual and State-level.  India is no Israel that will help evacuate Hindus

Popular sport water skiing celebrates its 100th anniversary

Image
As a sport, water skiing is adventurous and exhilarating but how did it come into being? It was due to the inventiveness and initiative of a young man from Minnesota that humankind got this water sport as per a report in smithsonianmag.com. Ralph Samuelson while going down snowy hills on ski was struck with a thought as to why he could not ski on water just as he did on the snow. The year was 1922 and from summer of that year 18-year-old Samuelson started attempting to stand up on skis on Lake Pepin – located very close to his house. After several failed bids, he finally succeeded and then the world’s most loved water sport was born. This year marks the 100th anniversary of that momentous event and on July 2 at 4.11 p.m. the leading citizens of Lake City unveiled Samuelson’s life-sized bronze statue on the shores of Lake Pepin. It was on this day and that precise time Samuelson was on water skiing behind his brother’s boat. For the celebration held at present, Samuelson did not receive
